Free Surfer

Net#WorkBBDO: 2022

Corona Studios Free Surfer

A two-part documentaries about two surfers from South Africa that broke racial and gender barriers and found freedom in the barrel of the wave. Their love for the ocean had them unknowingly confronting injustice, breaking down stereotypes and advocating for equality, in a country with a long history of oppression.

Cass Collier

An OG surfer from Grassy Park, a township in an impoverished area in Cape Town South Africa. Coached by his father, Cass fought all odds to become a Big Wave World Champion Surfer. All this during a time when he couldn’t surf on the elite “Whites Only” beaches because of past racial segregation laws of the apartheid regime in South Africa. A time when the sport of surfing was filled with surfers that look nothing like him.

Khanyisa Mngqibisa

A young girl from the township of Khayalitsha, Cape Town. Who besides being told that she can’t save grown men when drowning because she is a girl, and that surfing is a white people sport, she went on to become the 1st female international lifeguard and surf coach. From a young age, she decided that no one can carve her path out for her.

We commemorated these amazing surfers with Freedom Benches made from their surfboards, which were placed in their birth city of CT.
